The Daimler Art Collection was started in 1977 and has grown continuously since then to its present total of about one thousand works. The collection reflects the 20th century's trend-setting abstract-constructive, conceptual or minimalist views of the image.

But the concept behind it also includes a small number of commissioned works.

An important step towards making the collection more international was taken in 1986, when Andy Warhol received a commission on the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary, though only 35 pictures and 12 drawings of the approximately 80 pictures planned for the "Cars" series were realized before Warhol died in 1987.

A second commission went to the New York artist Robert Longo (a sequence of 5 black-and-white 'portraits' of Mercedes-Benz models).

The new Sylvie Fleury video works blends the appeal of legendary Mercedes-Benz automobiles - from Lightning Benz via Gullwing to C 111 - with the latest contemporary ideas from the worlds of art and fashion.
