Robert Longo

The Daimler Art Collection was started in 1977 and has expanded continuously since then to approximately 1800 works by about 600 artists. It reflects the 20th century's key abstract-constructive, conceptual or minimalist approaches to pictures. But the collection has always included a few specially commissioned works. An important step towards internationalization in 1986 was a commission extended to Andy Warhol to mark the company's 100th anniversary: the "Cars" series was to have included 80 pictures, but only 35 pictures and 12 drawings had been completed when Warhol died in 1987. A second commission went to the New York artist Robert Longo, who produced a series of five black-and-white "portraits" and a full-wall airbrush painting of Mercedes-Benz models from 1995-1998.

The groups of works by Longo and Warhol are complemented by sculptures and picture objects whose shiny lacquered surfaces pick up car design and aesthetics or go back to signals and graphics from the world of cars (Flaig, Klasen, Miller, Szarek), and also by video works referring to motor racing, city traffic and car advertising (Fleury, Mosher)

Ulrike Flaig (*1962/D), Sylvie Fleury (*1961/CH), Richard Hamilton (*1922 London/GB), Peter Klasen (*1935/D), Robert Longo (*1953/USA), Gerold Miller (*1961/D), Kirsten Mosher (*1963/USA), Vincent Szarek (*1973/USA), Andy Warhol (1927-1987USA), Ina Weber (1964/D)
