Daimler-Benz,
now Daimler, chose eight artists and acquired one of their
existing sculptures, or commissioned a new one. The artists
were Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, François Morellet, Nam June
Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark di Suvero and Jean Tinguely.
The
new works were realized from September
1997 onwards. All the artists involved have developed
their own strategies for addressing the current relationship
between art and urban space, over decades in some
cases. And they were each determined to add
a new dimension to the city that was in tune with
the times: treating the "city as a
space that tells stories". Their work is to be found
in public places all over the Western world. They use art
as a way of talking to people,
making an almost Utopian attempt to turn reality into art
while losing as little as possible in the process.
